ALTINKENT INTERNATIONAL Airport
Altınkent Uluslararası Havalİmanı
Altınkent is a fictional city located in the Aegean Region of Türkiye.
History
The city of Altınkent had a small airfield used by the Ottoman Armed Forces, which was named İncirovası Airfield because of the many figs around the airport. In 1933, the Turkish State Airlines started its flights to İncirovası Airfield. However, night flights were not possible due to technical deficiencies and large planes could not land on the runway. With the increasing need, plans to allocate İncirovası Airfield to civil flights were made in the early 1960s and the surrounding lands were expropriated.
With the opening of the new airport, Turkish Airlines started operating flights from Altınkent. While the new airport had parking area for nine narrowbody aircraft, the apron was quickly modified to accommodate two widebody aircraft in the 1970s. Flights to Altınkent Airport increased with additional Turkish Airlines flights. The latter was replaced by the national airlines of the newly independent Central Asian states during the early 1990s. This period also saw the rise of many Turkish charter carriers, for which the airport expanded with additional ramps.
Turkey experienced a severe banking crisis during 2000 and 2001. In November 2000, banks start to close their interbank credit lines to vulnerable Turkish banks, after concerns about the health of the banking sector have increased sharply. This was followed by a political crisis in early 2001. Despite the crisis, Altınkent Airport decided to expand the airport territory to build a new international terminal and a dedicated cargo platform. During the 2000s however, the airport still used its original platforms.
By the 2010, Altınkent International Airport had constructed a new passenger and cargo terminal. The original airport platforms were handed over to the Air Force and the territory got renamed İncirovası Airfield again.
